Complex and culturally relevant text in paired literacy is key for the development of biliteracy (Escamilla, et. al, 2014).   All students deserve an opportunity to identify themselves with characters in stories to develop academic language and gain knowledge attainment.  English learners in dual language programs are learning to read in two languages to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.  Hence, paired literacy instruction, provides students with an interactive and intentional approach for reading and writing.

Teaching ESL: Beyond “Best Practice”
Limited Capacity seats available

Supporting our English learners is far more complex than language development. It is cultural, emotional, and social development. It is teaching both content and language acquisition while guiding students to find their true identity. It is welcoming their stories and struggles, and praising their perseverance.  Supporting our English learners is advocating for their right to live multiple language and to live multiple cultures. It is not solely “best teaching practice.” It racial justice. It is equal opportunity.

Nearpod - BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Limited Capacity seats available

Nearpod is a student engagement platform that can be used to amazing effect in the classroom. The concept is simple. A teacher can create presentations that can contain Quiz's, Polls, Videos, Images, Drawing-Boards, Web Content and so on. They can also access over 7K k-12 standards-aligned lessons. The children can access a teacher’s presentation through a code. The teacher can move the class through the presentation and let them interact with the media as they go. They can also opt for student-paced, where the student controls the flow of the lesson. The app is ‘web-based’ and is accessible on a ‘log in’ basis. This means that you can access your Nearpod account through any device that connects to the internet. The nice thing about this is that you can run and, more importantly, create your presentations on a computer. In this case, the iPad is just the tool to deliver your Nearpod creations with in the classroom. Ultimately, the real beauty of this app is that it enables you to connect with your students (digitally that is). This connection and the flexible nature of Nearpod means that it can be used in many different creative and innovative ways.
